I was expecting to feel happy, or relieved. But somehow, I feel like I’m grieving.
This was our first home. It sat vacant for 6 years and needed lots of TLC. I’d like to think we served it pretty well, as it did us. It was a lot of work — seemingly endless. It was nearly uninhabitable when we bought it. And yet, it was simple and largely reliable as we chugged along . I had a beautiful raspberry patch in the back, and a gigantic rhododendron canopy.
It was an interesting block. One neighbor sold drugs, the other was my insurance agent and friend, and of course... there was the guy who took offense to me owning four cars. Oh, and another neighbor wrote zombie romance novels and was kind of a household name in the, uhh, romantic zombie community.
I was two doors down from about 300 units of low-income housing. Other than a minor nuisance at times, and some abandoned shopping carts, they were all largely great. The neighborhood has improved significantly. Many homes were remodeled and sold to cash in on the market. Now only on e home on the entire block is a rental (also noe remodeled) — which I had previously rented myself.
Over six years on the same block... Now I’m starting all over again, with higher stakes.
My “before” photos are buried in some laptop somewhere that I’m sure doesn’t turn on anymore, but here’s some photos of from last night. A family of four bought this house. That’s a tight squeeze, but they’re excited about getting out of their apartment.
Anyway... see you around, house.

That block sounds like it could have been it’s own reality tv show or sitcom.
Also, what’s that down on the wall by the wall adjacent to the fridge?

Basically a broom closet that isn't a real closet... The joke is that it's a bunch of negative space where we fit our vacuum, mop, brooms.

Zoidberg I hope you left a sign for your counting neighbour;
“Let me count the ways I hate you, 4. 4 ways. -love Z.”

The only 300-unit affordable housing complex that I know of in the county is in North Everett, and a home that looks like it was originally from the 1940s or earlier are also in that neighborhood.
I lived in North Everett for a year before moving to Casino Road. Was I living in your neighbourhood before I became an Oppo? :p

Also, congratulations to you selling the house, and congratulations to that family for getting a home.

We did the same thing. Put a room. Of work into our old haouse and 5 yrs later moved out. You’ll move and fall on love with the new place. Our old house is only a couple miles away so we do drive past it occasionally and that is wierd

No I mean the little microwave looking thing on the bottom of the wall.

Be happy! If I ever trade up, it will be because my salary doubled, I won a lottery, or am relocating. Your old house will get over it, you gave it a new life, it is happy.
I think my 2003 build shoebox has the same countertops, but a different color.

I know the feeling. Even though I never lived in it, selling my mom’s house was hard. Alright, I did live on the land for seven years, but that was in the house that burned down. This was the house she replaced it with. But I digress.
Congratulations on your sad/happy day.

Yeah, that feeling makes a lot of sense. Plenty of history and stories there, plus, as I wrote to my wife earlier today, “One of the only remaining truths is that moving always sucks.” That place looks great. You did yeoman work on it, and let’s hope it provides the next family the springboard it gave you. Best of luck and fortune.
